And what challenges and obstacles might a project like that face, and how could they be overcome? For example: where exactly would that line run through each of these cities, based on each city's geography, population density, and infrastructure? How many workers would a project like this need? What equipment and machinery would be needed for the various processes of laying the railway tracks in those cities? How long would the whole project be expected to take? What would it cost? And how could it be completed with the best possible quality at the lowest possible cost? And most important of all, what would the operating costs be once the project is complete, including expenses for the trains and their maintenance, fuel costs, and worker salaries? Also, how could the train schedules between different cities be arranged? And finally, how could ticket prices for each trip be calculated based on all these expenses we mentioned, while also taking into account the financial circumstances of the people in those cities? They have extensive expertise and skills in mathematics, management, and planning, and through a number of techniques and tools, they're able to make all the decisions related to every aspect of a project like this. They gather the various data related to the project and use specialized computer software to count and analyze that data, then arrive at results on the basis of which the appropriate decisions are made. The work of operations research analysts isn't limited to engineering projects or the like โ they can work in almost every industry. - Formulate mathematical or simulation models of problems, relating constants and variables, restrictions, alternatives, conflicting objectives, and their numerical parameters.
- Collaborate with others in the organization to ensure successful implementation of chosen problem solutions.
- Analyze information obtained from management to conceptualize and define operational problems.
- Perform validation and testing of models to ensure adequacy, and reformulate models, as necessary.
- Collaborate with senior managers and decision makers to identify and solve a variety of problems and to clarify management objectives.
- Define data requirements, and gather and validate information, applying judgment and statistical tests.
- Study and analyze information about alternative courses of action to determine which plan will offer the best outcomes.
- Prepare management reports defining and evaluating problems and recommending solutions.
- Break systems into their components, assign numerical values to each component, and examine the mathematical relationships between them.
- Specify manipulative or computational methods to be applied to models.
- Observe the current system in operation, and gather and analyze information about each of the component problems, using a variety of sources.
- Design, conduct, and evaluate experimental operational models in cases where models cannot be developed from existing data.
- Develop and apply time and cost networks to plan, control, and review large projects.
- Develop business methods and procedures, including accounting systems, file systems, office systems, logistics systems, and production schedules.
- Present the results of mathematical modeling and data analysis to management or other end users.
- Educate staff in the use of mathematical models.
- Review research literature.
