On November 7, 2003, a 67-year-old British woman named Dorothy Fletcher suffered a heart attack while on board a flight headed to the United States. As luck would have it, there happened to be a group of cardiologists nearby on the plane, on their way to attend a medical conference. The moment they heard her daughter, who was traveling with her, crying out for help, they rushed over, gave her first aid, and managed to save her life. Heart disease refers to a group of disorders affecting the heart and blood vessels, and the most common heart diseases are: coronary artery disease, cerebrovascular disease, cardiomyopathy, and heart valve disease. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the world, which is why cardiologists carry an extremely heavy responsibility — they're tasked with treating and saving as many heart disease patients as possible and helping them live better lives, and they're also responsible for helping people prevent heart disease in the first place.
