If we look up at the sky during the day, we'll of course see the sun, and maybe some clouds with it. And if we gaze at it at night, we'll see the moon and the stars. But what else is up there in the sky? Or we could ask, what else is out there in the universe? This question has occupied humans since we first existed on Earth. Over the centuries, many people have worked hard to understand and explore the universe, until they arrived at the facts we know today. One of the most important facts we've come to understand is that we live on planet Earth, and that this planet orbits the sun along with other planets, and that the sun itself is just a star, sitting alongside all the other planets inside a galaxy called "the Milky Way." Inside this galaxy alone there are more than a hundred billion stars, and the universe as a whole contains more than a hundred thousand galaxies. We're now fully aware of all this - but do you know what field of science is behind it? It's "astronomy," and astronomers are the specialists who study everything related to the universe.
